Review of ‘Silence Between Waves’

Silence Between Waves is a dance performance presented by Paignton-born and critically acclaimed choreographer Richard Chappell, and co-produced with Dance in Devon. Its performance on picturesque Berry Head involved 3 professional dancers from Singapore in collaboration with a cast of over 50 local dancers from a range of community groups, supported by charity Dance in Devon.
Silence fell across the headland as audience members sat transfixed by Chappell’s beautiful choreography. A moving display of dance, Silence Between Waves reflects and compares the community and communion felt with the sea in the distinct but linked communities of Torbay and urban Singapore. The setting of Berry Head, and its backdrop of blue skies and waves, was apt for such a beautiful interpretation of the meaning of home to dancers from opposite sides of the world. It was wonderful to see members of the community unite both to witness the performance and participate in it. This will hopefully create further opportunities for creative collaboration between members of the community in Torbay.
If you missed Silence Between Waves on Berry Head, you can catch a one-off performance on 20 June at the Exeter Phoenix as part of Richard Chappell’s upcoming tour.
Richard Chappell Dance have also created a short film to capture aspects of this unique performance - keep an eye on Eyeview social media for details of where it will be screened over summer 2019.
