Louis Bingham & Griselda Sanderson

Louis Bingham and Griselda Sanderson are a mother and son duo who keep alive the timeless traditions of a musical family. Louis plays fretted instruments such as the Celtic cittern, guitar, and Bulgarian tambura, as well as being an accomplished singer. Griselda plays bowed string instruments including the violin, the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, and the Swedish nyckelharpa.

Highly regarded as individual stylists on their respective instruments, when they join forces the combinations of fretted, bowed and sympathetic strings colour their arrangements with a rich resonance. This creates a vivid soundscape echoing the broad span of their repertoire, which, inspired by the many rich traditions of Europe and beyond, reaches from Galicia to Norway, from Donegal toPiedmont, and many more places in between.

As well as duo performances they also play in the six piece Meridianum Ensemble, an international world music group combining musicians from Portugal the UK and Morocco, with diverse instrumentation including the Persian santur, medieval hurdy-gurdy and North African oud.

Louis and Gris have provided music for various production companies (Giffords Circus, Shakespeares Globe, the RSC). The latest show they are involved in is Hedgespoken’s Iron Brow and Thorn Coat, an Arts Council funded project combining storytelling, puppetry, physical theatre and music. They also run Tunelink South West, a community music project which maintains a popular rolling programme of regular classes, workshops and public dances in and around South Devon.
