Call for Human Seahorses

As part of The Offering, artist Shelley Castle is looking for 40 ‘human seahorses’ aged 14 and over to join a very special procession on 16th June 2019. (We hope that younger aspiring seahorses will join us for The Offering, with dance, performances and fun on the beach!).

You will be adorned with theatrical make-up to imitate the seahorses living in Tor Bay, whose eyes blacken like a mask as they engage in their courtship dance. You will not be required to dance (unless you want to when we reach the beach!). You will be asked to dress in clothes that reflect the colours of the spiny and snout-nosed seahorses that live in the seagrass in Tor Bay – yellows, whites, textures, pale greens. These could be as ordinary or theatrical as you see fit.

Watch this film by our partners The Seahorse Trust to get a glimpse of these wonderful creatures.

Human Seahorses will need to be available for the following dates:

  • Monday 10th June, Torquay: Rehearsal: 6pm to 8pm

  • Sunday 16th June, Torquay:

    • Make-up/dressing: 9am to 11am

    • Procession Performance: 11am to 1pm

    • Beach Celebrations: 1pm -  3.30/4pm (depending on tide)

Register here for Human Seahorses.

Musician Call Out

We need a trumpet or trombone player who is happy to collaborate on composing a new simple work to then perform on Father’s Day 16th June as part of The Offering.

We will need the musician to lead a procession from the Town Hall to Torre Abbey Sands starting at 11.00am, reaching the beach at about 1.30pm. Music will continue until approximately 3.30pm.

The commissioned piece of music will be very simple, inspired by the sea and possibly involve some improvisation. The ideal person will be happy to experiment and work with others.

We envisage no more than 3 two-hour rehearsal/composition sessions and 1 three-hour dress rehearsal all in Torquay.  We hope (but it’s not entirely necessary) that the musician would be interested in collaborating with a musical group from Torbay for one of the composition sessions.

The fee is £400 and the rights to the composition will remain with the musician but be available for use for Eye View and The Offering.
